Once the country estate and mansion of the wealthy Sefton family, Croxteth Park in the 20th century gradually became surrounded by Liverpool’s suburbs into which were decanted the poorer and most deprived communities from central Liverpool’s slums. The demise of the Sefton family left a park on their doorstep and the task of both conserving a historic park and garden which had been created to serve a few wealthy and privileged people and of opening up this superb park as a wonderful opportunity for open air recreation for the people of Croxteth. To begin with Liverpool tried to do this without including the community. Gradually it has been realized that the only future for this park is with and as part of the local community.
